It's Sunday and I am dreaming this morning still. Dreaming of art and design; and how to marry the two. In art school, I created mostly installation art, large scale room sized projects filled with 3 dimensional sensory pieces for an experiential effect. All the while trying to make the connection to my love of interior design. I have always loved how the home is a place to connect, retreat, engage and hopefully be a sanctuary for the resident. But what to do when you have more wall space than you know what to do with , or are looking for new ways to approach the surfaces that surround you? Well, why not look to the realm of fine art for inspiration. Here are a few designers/ artists who seem to offer insight into what that can look like in domestic spaces.

Creamy Golden Holiday Decor

 

 

 

 

How will you set your holiday table this year? For many of us Thanksgiving is fast approaching. And I have always adored the use of faded golds and amber glass paired with creamware and glowing candle light for a festive, warm gentle holiday table. These images make me want to cozy up to a fire and share memories with friends and family whilst sipping a hot beverage. Ahh, I love fall and winter here (so different from my Texas upbringing). Do you have any special holiday traditions you would like to share?

Getting to Know...Elizabeth of Betty Hatchett Design

 

 

 

 

 

 

Allow me to introduce one of my dearest friends, Elizabeth of Betty Hatchett Design. Once roomates, Elizabeth and I have shared a similar design aesthetic and desire to create art and spaces together. She has recently moved and completely restored a Victorian row house in Cincinnati. And I love the way it is turning out so far. Hopefully someday we will have a home tour.

As a wedding favor, my husband and I made 300 venus de milo candles out of a mold that belonged to his grandmother.  There were about 20 wall flowers that weren't chosen, so we display them as a reminder.  It's super fun to see candles at our friends homes too, especially when they are interestingly contorted by heat (lesson: use wax stiffener!)  We also smiled really big when we learned that one of our favorite little girls (who was actually present at the wedding, before Juli, her mother, even knew it) is learning the joys of nurturing with her yellow armless friend.  (Juli took her little angel's photo and, as you can see, she is a fantastic photographer… juliannaboehm.com)

I've been buying dried beans and grains at the recommendation of some of my health guru friends.  It makes me feel good to eat healthier and buy less packaging, but honestly, what I feel best about is how pretty it all looks in those glass jars.  (purchased from ikea).  Occasionally I like to pull an Amelie and plunge my hand into the grains too.

For texture of a different variety, I've been really enjoying our flokati rug.  This may be because we got it this week, it may be because it's the first room size rug I've ever owned, but I think it's mostly because it's fluffy to the point of obnoxiousness

my favorite flower vacillates between peonies and dahlias, usually depending on the season, and this is the glorious time of year when dahlias shine.  This beauty was at a fabulous public garden in Cincinnati called Ault Park.

My husband woke up one morning with a "vision" for our future bedroom: black ceilings and white lanterns.  This was right about the time when I was feeling like a light and airy decor change could be nice. But he was so excited…so we tried it and behold, I really love it.  They are on a remote control dimmer too.  (he's so smart)

I found this lady at the salvation army when I was looking for a necklace hook.  We attached her to the side of a cabinet in our bathroom and those voluptuous hips do the job perfectly.  Now I love her so much I want to find little friends for her to carry the rest of my necklace collection.

Eve and I have lots of new product to show you from our successful Handmade in the Arcade show this past weekend, so we are in the process of listing. Getting to Know...Daniella of Dress, Design, Decor

 

 

 

Hello Lovelies, Meet Daniella of Dress, Design, Decor here to share her favorite things with us. I love how she created a color coordinated fall line up!

Daniella - Ontario, Canada - Graphic Designer

1. First off, my Macbook Pro... I can't live without this one, and not just because i'm a graphic designer. My life is on here! In a fire i'd save Miley (my siamese kitty) and my Macbook... just saying... :)

2. Paris Vogue and a Starbucks latté... ok that's 2 in 1, but they're better together, especially tucked away in a quiet corner of a bookstore somewhere. Paris VOGUE is my little slice of the french life each month... even if I can't actually read the articles. I'm considering learning the language just for this purpose.

3. Kérastase In-Salon Treatments... Have you heard of this before? It's an in-salon deep conditioning treatment for your hair. You sit in a massaging chair, in a darkened room, while a hairstylist massages the treatment in for a half hour... it is sooo worth it and my hair was super soft after. You can find a salon near you on their site.

4. Diptyque Candles... Parisian made and they burn forever - evenly too. My favourite so far is Lilac... fills the whole room with fragrance. I love the soothing, floral smell. You can buy them online from C.O. Bigelow, but I got mine from Noor in Toronto.

5. Books by the publisher Ryland, Peters & Small... Every book by this publisher is gorgeous - no joke. From decor to detoxing, recipes and crafts, every book has the most amazing accompanying photography. Sometimes I scan the bookshelves for the publisher logo, as opposed to paying attention to what the topic is, just to stumble across some new eye candy. Try it, you won't be disappointed. (They also have stationery products using the same photography.)

Discovering Dining Rooms

 

 

 

 

 

 

Ever since moving into a new "grown up" home with an actual formal dining room I have been at a loss as to what to do with it or even knowing what my dining room style is. Now, the holidays are approaching and I will be hosting Christmas at my home for the first time ever! So what to do with the dining room??Here is some of my research I want to share with you. I think I am looking for something comfortable, elegant, feminine with an unexpected touch.  Here is what I have right now and it feels a little plain and lonely. Do you have any suggestions? I would love to hear your great ideas on dressing up a dining room for company!
