You are in for a special treat today from one of my new friends from the Blogging Your Way e-course, Vicki of Simply Hue! She is here today to share some color consulting secrets. Here she is...
Good morning! My name is Vicki Dvorak and I'm a color consultant from the Seattle area. I feel so excited and honored to be a guest poster on "Gathering Spriggs" today! I love Heather's site and all of the beautiful vintage finds she discovers and posts for us to drool over.
Heather asked me to share a little with you about how to create a color scheme for your home. Here are a few tips that might be helpful:
- Find an "inspiration piece". This can be almost anything! If you have a favorite piece of art, a photo you treasure, a decorative toss pillow, or even a colorful flower arrangement from your garden it can be used to inspire a color scheme for you home. The flower photos in this post serve as the "inspiration pieces" for the three colorful rooms I've included.
- Jot down the colors you're attracted to from your "inspiration piece". Also, jot down the colors you absolutely do not want to see in your home. That helps narrow it down quite a bit! (Sometimes it helps if you purchase a small color wheel and eliminate colors one by one.)
- Decide on the general mood or feeling you want to create in your home. Do you want your home to feel relaxing and serene? Cool colors like soft greens, subtle blues, and lilac have a restful affect and are perfect if you want a home that is soothing and peaceful. If you want your home to feel alive, welcoming, and cheerful choose warm colors like vibrant oranges, reds, and yellows. And, if you're a little intimidated to use such bold color, choose neutral wall colors (browns, grays, whites) and bring more daring color in through your fabrics, accessories, and artwork.
- Once you have your final colors narrowed down, you can head to the paint store for paint swatches/chips. If you still feel a little lost, paint retailers are usually very helpful and knowledgeable and can help you pick the finalists! Here's one tip you'll want to remember: Always purchase small sample paints and paint your paint colors on 2'x2' pieces of posterboard before painting your walls. Move them around your room and see what your the colors look like at different times of the day and in various lighting. When you're happy with the color, then paint that wall!
