I am constantly amazed what a little paint and a brush can do to bring new life to outdated pieces. What do you think about painted pieces?? Do you have any DIY success stories to share?

Usually I don't take the time to read chain store catalogues (except Anthropologie and JCrew of course). But this weekend I paged carefully through the Restoration Hardware Fall 2010 Catalogue because I was intrigued by the rough hewn aesthetic on the cover. Since I have been in the process of refinishing some antique furniture recently (... yes, I do mean stripping, sanding, re-staining and sealing) I found myself drawn to the natural wood tones of all their featured pieces. A far cry from the dark walnut stains of say 2002!! The concept as a whole intrigues me even though I could never afford their furniture and prefer scouring flea markets and junk shops for my prized pieces( notice I didn't include their pages here--- still a little too masculine for me). However, it did prompt a complete overhaul on my decorative painting business identity, blog and logo. See what you think. I have always resisted letting this blog and that one overlap. But now, I am really excited about this look so much so that I might just start posting my work regularly and letting you have a peek from time to time. (even if my work is more tailored to my client's needs instead of my own aesthetic) Anyway.... enough about me.

Gathering Paint (on my pants)

 

Building a home is a continual work in progress. And in mine I tend to want a finished product sooner rather than later. Do you know what I mean? So I decided to overcome my perfectionist tendencies and share a little sneak peak of the projects I have been working on for the past few months around the house. It all started with this design dilemma. And from staring at my colorless walls I began building a palette and trying to create a warmer welcome.
With a next to nothing budget I decided to work with my strengths. Paint. A quick and easy solution to transform nearly anything. I spend my days painting other people's homes to make a living and although I a tend to be tired when I come home, I began to do unto myself as I do unto others. I've enjoyed it so much that now I am continuing to paint vintage finds and small household items and have listed them for sale at Gathering Spriggs.
I would love to hear your thoughts, critiques, and suggestions to take it to the next level.
p.s. I am in the process of getting a slipcover made in canvas for the green couch!

Spring Themed Murally Accents

  

 

Good Monday Morning!!!  How was your weekend?? Restful? Productive? I am so excited to be painting my home after many weeks of this. My assistant is coming over today to help me get started on the whole downstairs.  So after many months of looking at paint chips and making samples for myself, I am finally ready to do my own home! Yay! And I have a boatload of DIY projects in store in the coming weeks if I can disciplined and focused to do them all. But one thing I have been thinking of is a mural accent wall. I have painted murals for many of my clients for years but never for myself. Here is a collection of images that are inspiring me today.

This is what I do

So I thought I would share a little about what I do to make a living. For the past five years I have had a successful faux finishing business working mostly on residential projects, customizing my client's homes in the greater Nashville area. Today, however, I finished a large project for Chappy's Restaurant a downtown Nashville establishment offering New Orleans style flavors. I had done a few small things for them when they opened two years ago, but this project was for a brand new banquet hall and wedding reception area. The theme was the Napoleonic area. Marbling and Gilding!
