Don't you love a good story? Ones of great fortitude, of creative entrepreneurial spirit that doesn't give up? I sure do. They help me live with hope and expectation of possibility.
That is why when I received an email from Katherine sharing not only her beautifully designed jewelry collection but also her personal story of becoming the maker behind Katheyl, I knew you would like to get to know her too.
Katherine of Katheyl, a native of Singapore, began as an Electronics enginieer for 7 years before moving into the Senior Executive Search industry. Then her life took a turn when she quit her job, picked up from her homeland and moved to Germany to join her husband. She explains the process:
"I guess the lecturer in my HR course was right when he said a person changes his/her career path at least 3 times in his/her life.
I started Katheyl when I was still holding down a full-time job but never quite had the time to focus on it. It was just a hobby (other than volunteering at the local zoo and squeezing in a game of archery from time to time), but still something that I had hoped to spend more time on.
So when I finally got the chance to work full-time on Katheyl when I moved to Germany, it's like a dream come true! The whole experience has been truly wonderful. I've grown to love handmade things even more and become more conscious of unnecessary spending and buying."
Katherine credits her Asian roots and her stint as a zoo volunteer as the inspiration behind her nature influenced collection. (What hasn't this woman done?!)
You can see the dedication and imagination flowing out from her beautiful designs. Now she is at a new crossroads, crafting a life of passion.

Won't you journey back in time with me say 20 years ago (or so) to a period of yesteryear where a teenage girl dreaming of a bygone era where flowing skirts, afternoon tea, parlor games and horse-drawn carriages were the norm, pined over the mailbox delivery of a glossy magazine that would alter her life forever?
I was that girl and Victoria Magazine was my dose of monthly heaven to transport my heavy heart. So when my sister and I spotted not one but two stacks of vintage Victoria issues (1991 and 1993) at an antique store in Kansas City we snatched them without thinking twice and spent our afternoon reveling in and savoring each page. With every turn of the glossy pages a new memory sparked and launched a barrage of stories from high school .... like the time I hosted a Victorian croquet party in my front lawn complete with a crisp linened table filled with luncheon snacks, tea and cakes. ( I invited my highschool crush and he CAME).
The magazine was my solace. The place where dreams were born. And today looking back with fondness I am still drawn to these images. Isn't it interesting how current these images look? I mean, I don't know if it is because culturally we are drawing on inspiration from the early 90's now with a resurgence of pastels, lace, florals and all things granny chic, but aren't these looking more current than dated? Its hard for me to be unbiased since these images were home to my heart for so many years.

Lovelies! Thank you for being here with me this week, this year, through thick and thin. This week has been somewhat challenging (as you may have noticed). I am still trying to get myself my home, my work, my body and my creativity back together after being away for nearly a week. My home turned into a man cave while I was gone, which is ok. I don't blame him. He made it up to me by surprising me with this beautiful Romantic necklace upon my return. I just feel a bit like a mess right now in more ways than one. I have some ongoing health problems that are beginning to interrupt life as I knew it. My doctor's appointment is not for two more weeks and I am trying to hold on. To do what I can , to give myself grace. But the perfectionist, achiever in me isn't really digging this delay. So I am taking time this weekend to give to myself. My husband is a constant Romantic ... he really lives out Valentine's Day sentiments through out the year. That with the fact that he is a Classical Guitar player, we don't really see each other this time of year. He is providing a romantic musical setting for many other lovers. So we try to incorporate Valentine's into our routine. Try to make time for dinner out, he buys me flowers and sweet gifts. We are planning a romantic mountain getaway in a few weeks, so we look forward to that time together.

Romantic style captured my heart from a very young age. I remember when my ears were first pierced at age 12 ( a long anticipated rite of passage), and all I could imagine for weeks was the feeling of beautiful dangling victorian rose petals or antique brass trinkets twinkling with tiny jewels. Years have passed and the young Victorian in me still abides. I'm a sucker for jewelry with a historic spin. With Valentine's Day right around the corner and wedding season approaching I am imagining a new Romantic wandering the streets, adorned with precious tokens of love such as these. Have to say I am still recovering a bit from our travels and busy holiday with the family. Here are some pretties I pulled together last week that are calling to me to tack up on my inspiration board for next years' style files. A little exotic, a little rough hewn vintage and a little modern all at once.
